Significant changes to a family, such as divorce or the addition of a step-parent, can have a major impact on the emotional health of children. 9. ADHD

It's not uncommon that the symptoms of ADD / ADHD are misunderstood. Parents often fear that their children with ADHD are trying to be difficult, not truly understanding the challenges they face. Similarly, in adult relationships, symptoms of inattention are easily mistaken for aloofness, apathy, or uncaring.

For these reasons, psychoeducation is a crucial part of treating ADHD in children and adults alike. Not only will proper education help to clear up the misconceptions of others, it can show your clients that they aren't alone. It can help them realize that there is a very real cause for what they're dealing with.

Our What is ADHD? printout covers the most important areas of psychoeducation related to ADHD with simple and easy-to-understand language (although, this form is ultimately intended for adults). The areas that are discussed include symptoms, what ADHD really looks like, the biological basis of ADHD, and and an overview of treatment options.

The Human Brain Diagram is a versatile tool for psychoeducation. The diagram separates the brain into six major parts, and provides a brief description of the functions carried out by each section.

Discussion of the brain, and how it works, can be a powerful way to explore many topics. Explaining the physical changes behind mental illness can help them feel less abstract, and more like something real that can be treated.

We especially like to use this diagram as a visual aid for psychoeducation about how the brain changes during the fight-or-flight response, anger, and drug intoxication. This printout also looks great as a framed wall decoration in a therapy office.

The worksheet describes common traits associated with these styles and how they impact adult romantic relationships.

Use this worksheet to introduce clients to attachment styles and aid them in the identification of their style. This is a valuable step for clients wishing to improve their relationships and break unhelpful patterns.
